About Oxytocin Acetate

Oxytocin is a 9-amino acid cyclic peptide neurohormone synthesized in the paraventricular and supraoptic nuclei of the hypothalamus and released from the posterior pituitary. The ring structure is formed by a disulfide bridge between cysteine residues at positions 1 and 6, and the C-terminal glycine is amidated — a post-translational modification essential for full receptor binding activity. Oxytocin is structurally closely related to vasopressin (AVP), differing only at positions 3 (Ile vs. Phe) and 8 (Leu vs. Arg), yet exhibits distinct receptor selectivity in pharmacological studies.

Research applications for oxytocin encompass its binding affinity and kinetics at oxytocin receptors (OTR) and vasopressin receptors (V1a, V1b, V2) in radioligand competition assays, downstream Gq-protein coupling and intracellular Ca²⁺ mobilization characterization, and oxytocin receptor pharmacology studies in heterologous expression systems.
