About LL37
LL-37 is the C-terminal 37-amino acid cathelicidin peptide fragment cleaved from the human cathelicidin precursor protein hCAP-18 by serine protease activity. The peptide adopts an amphipathic α-helical secondary structure in membrane-mimicking environments, with cationic residues along one helix face and hydrophobic residues along the other — a configuration typical of membrane-active antimicrobial peptides. LL-37 is primarily expressed in neutrophils, macrophages, mast cells, and epithelial cells, and represents the sole cathelicidin in the human proteome.
